House Rabbit Resource Network

House Rabbit Resource Network is a rabbit shelter in Pflugerville, Texas (a tad north of Austin). We've been volunteering at HRRN since 2018, and during our time there we learned more about and helped care for around 100 bunnies. I definitely updated my old bunny knowledge and am quite impressed with how much there is now, like gut stasis. In the early 2000s, I checked out the few library rabbit books that I could find to care for my childhood buns. I'm definitely more prepared now!

More about volunteer work - the rabbit shelter has various shifts that volunteers can pick up. We started off with cleaning, then feeding, and lately watering since it worked best with our work schedule (and hay allergies). Some bunnies prefer water bowls so they get a closer encounter with their "buntenders". We try to get most of the bunnies on water bottles since it's easier tracking how much water they drink, and don't have to worry about them making tea with various things. Why do they like poop tea? Changing water bowls is how we met and adopted Lucita and Hansel, the buns of Bun Bun Studio. They still prefer water bowls.

Some of the other tasks trained volunteers can do are medication, store cashier, bunny boarding, and even looking at bunny poop through a microscope. And once a year they do one big, all-hands-on-deck, spring cleaning where everyone deep cleans the whole shelter - cages, floors, and even walls. Dust bunnies get everywhere. If you notice how squeaky clean the floorboards were in the adoption room in spring - that was us :)

We've encountered so many different colors and sizes of bunnies while we volunteered here - Dutch, Flemish, Californian, Rex - we have most of the breeds memorized! My goal for Bun Bun Studio is to feature all of them in my art.

Want to help volunteer, adopt, or donate? Visit their website: RabbitResource.org. You can also follow HRRN's Facebook and Instagram. HRRN also has a capital campaign to build a new shelter for the buns of central Texas! Their goal is to raise $2 million by 2027. If you want to contribute, go to their donation page and add a note for "HRRN Capital Campaign"
